Background of the Study
Network congestion occurs when a network’s data traffic exceeds its capacity, resulting in performance degradation, such as slow speeds, increased latency, and packet loss. This issue is particularly prevalent in university networks, which are heavily utilized by students, faculty, and staff for academic and administrative purposes. Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State, is experiencing network congestion due to the high volume of simultaneous users, applications, and devices on its campus network (Maitama & Kabir, 2024).
To mitigate network congestion, various congestion control mechanisms can be implemented, such as traffic shaping, load balancing, and prioritization of critical traffic (Adamu et al., 2023). Effective congestion control ensures that network resources are used efficiently and that critical applications such as e-learning platforms and video conferencing services are not disrupted by excessive traffic. This study will analyze the existing congestion control mechanisms at Federal University, Gusau, and assess their effectiveness in managing network traffic.
By identifying the key factors contributing to congestion and evaluating the current mitigation strategies, the study aims to provide recommendations for enhancing network performance and reducing the negative impacts of congestion.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Gusau, faces network congestion issues due to a high volume of simultaneous users and applications competing for limited bandwidth. The lack of effective congestion control mechanisms results in slow network speeds, poor user experience, and interruptions to essential academic and administrative services. Without proper traffic management strategies, network congestion will continue to hinder the university’s ability to support its growing digital needs.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current congestion control mechanisms in place at Federal University, Gusau.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these mechanisms in reducing network congestion and improving overall network performance.

  3. To recommend new or improved congestion control strategies to enhance the university’s network performance.

Research Questions

  1. What congestion control mechanisms are currently implemented at Federal University, Gusau?

  2. How effective are the current mechanisms in managing network congestion and improving performance?

  3. What new congestion control strategies can be adopted to optimize network performance at the university?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on evaluating the network congestion control mechanisms at Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State. The study will examine existing practices, their effectiveness, and propose improvements to reduce congestion. Limitations may include the difficulty in obtaining real-time traffic data, variations in network usage patterns, and challenges in implementing new congestion control measures without significant infrastructure upgrades.

Definitions of Terms

  • Network Congestion: The situation where the amount of data being transmitted on the network exceeds the capacity of the network infrastructure, leading to performance degradation.

  • Traffic Shaping: A technique used to control the flow of data packets to prevent network congestion and ensure efficient resource utilization.

  • Load Balancing: Distributing network traffic across multiple servers or devices to optimize resource usage and prevent congestion.

  • Packet Loss: The failure of data packets to reach their destination due to congestion or other issues in the network.
